ADHD Q & A

What is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with your daily functioning and development. It typically manifests in childhood and can persist into adulthood.

ADHD can affect various aspects of your life, including academics, work, relationships, and social interactions.

What causes ADHD?

The causes of ADHD aren’t fully understood, but a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors likely contributes to its development.

Genetic studies have shown that ADHD tends to run in families, suggesting a genetic predisposition. The Calm Psych team can perform genetic testing upon request.

Environmental factors such as prenatal exposure to toxins, maternal smoking or substance use during pregnancy, low birth weight, and premature birth may also increase your risk of developing ADHD.

In addition, abnormalities in specific brain regions involved in attention, impulse control, and executive functioning have been observed in individuals with ADHD.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

The symptoms of ADHD can vary depending on the subtype — predominantly inattentive presentation, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive presentation, or combined presentation.

Inattentive symptoms include:

  • Difficulty sustaining attention
  • Frequent careless mistakes
  • Forgetfulness
  • Disorganization
  • Trouble following instructions or completing tasks

Hyperactive-impulsive symptoms include:

  • Restlessness
  • Fidgeting
  • Excessive talking
  • Impulsivity
  • Difficulty waiting for turns
  • Interrupting others

If you or a loved one shows signs of ADHD, visit Calm Psych for a quantified behavioral (QB) test, which tracks your symptoms and collects data. It can also determine how well you respond to treatment.

How is ADHD treated?

At Calm Psych, treatment for ADHD typically involves a combination of the following:

Medication

Your provider may prescribe stimulant medications to help manage your symptoms by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine levels in your brain, improving attention and impulse control. Or, they may prescribe nonstimulant medications as alternatives or in combination with stimulants if you don’t respond well to stimulant therapy or have contraindications.

Behavioral therapy

Behavioral therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and behavior modification techniques, can help you develop coping strategies, improve organizational skills, and regulate your behavior.

Education and support

Education and support for you and your family offer understanding about the disorder, help manage symptoms, and address any associated difficulties.

Accommodations

Accommodations in educational and work settings, such as extended time on tests or workplace modifications, can help you succeed in your environment.
